M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film causes a ‘Split’ in opinion

M.+Night+Shyamalans+latest+film+causes+a+Split+in+opinion

As a fan on M. Night Shyamalan movies, I have to say I was unimpressed with his latest film “Split.”

The movie is about a man named Kevin who has split personality disorder, with a total of 23 personalities, and a rise of a possible 24th identity. His identities range from a nine year old boy, Hedwig, to an older woman named Patricia.

In the movie, the most notable personalities of Kevin are Patricia, Dennis, and Hedwig. They all have “The Light,” which is term used when one of his personalities take over Kevin’s body. Hedwig, who is the personality of a young boy, has a control of “The Light” and can control who can be in it. Patricia and Dennis realize this and manipulate Hedwig to let them have “The Light” most of the time.

Patricia and Dennis are the outcasts of the 23 personalities because their beliefs are not conventional, to say the least. The two believe in this god-like figure called The Beast. These beliefs are sinister, and include sacrificing, which is the main reason for the kidnapping of the three girls.

Like any M. Night Shyamalan movie, there’s a twist at the end, and you’ll have to go to the theaters and find the twist out for yourself.

Now, the movie was not my favorite, but the acting by lead James McAvoy was the best part. Acting as a man with split personalities is very tough to perform well, and McAvoy does just that. When he switches between characters, it’s a great transition, because they are all executed so well. Everything from his mannerisms to his voices are conducted so perfectly, you’d think he had split personalities himself.

I was expecting the movie to be a bit more scary, which it sadly wasn’t. I would definitely consider it more of a psychological thriller and suspense film. If you’re looking for a scare this movie, it only has one or two jump scares, so I wouldn’t suggest it for a horror fanatic. But if you’re interested in suspense thrillers, this is the movie for you.

Split gets 3 out of 5 stars.

this movie was so so so so good. 10/10 would recommend to anyone who likes good movies, don’t go into the movie expecting a horror movie though, its scary enough but super interesting and you definetly won’t be bored.

Just another movie about a man kidnapping/harassing girls… I am so sick of constantly seeing movies and shows where a girl is in trouble. It makes me sick being a girl in this society where it is okay to make a rape joke or a sexual assault joke. Now more than ever, with a sexual harasser as our president, we need to end the trend of watching girls in distress as ENTERTAINMENT! It is not funny. It is not entertaining. It is not a joke. It’s real and things like this happen to girls in our world every day.

Honestly, the movie was, in the very least, better than what it could have been, considering the plot and director. Shyamalan’s films have long since become dreadfully formulaic, especially in their twists, but in this case, he managed to diminish the (usual) effects of his directing. I would say that the best part of the movie was the acting of the lead, but it was bogged down by the fact that the other actors were mediocre at best.
Also, about your comment on how the (relatively) low number of jumpscares made it so horror fans wouldn’t appreciate it as much, I personally feel that jumpscares often tend to ruin a good atmosphere and by putting few into the movie, Shyamalan was showing some much needed restraint.
    Neat review, though :^)

“As a fan on M. Night Shyamalan movies,” you may want to fix this, also

I personally haven’t seen this movie but even so I have one question: why not lock him up/chain him down when he’s still in calm mode?
