As we’re right in the middle of the fall TV schedule, let’s look at some shows, both new and returning, that have proven to be quite prominent on TV viewers’ lists this season. Here’s an overview of some of these popular shows, and what the future for each looks like.

This Is Us
This drama – comedy crossbreed follows twins Kate and Kevin and adopted brother Randall, who also shares the same birthday as the twins. The three have different but intertwining stories, with Randall trying to find his biological father, Kevin trying to find a lifestyle different from his ways as  a bachelor, and Kate, being there along the way by playing the funny and sweet sibling. Despite being in its first season, the show has done remarkably well, with the first episode getting over 10 million views. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show has gotten a 91% thus far and an 8.8 / 10 on IMDb, probably because of its great set of dynamic characters and heartwarming story that unfolds more and more with each coming episode. The show is sure to have a second season, and is still airing its first season, on NBC, every Tuesday night.

Designated Survivor
In this dramatic thriller, Kiefer Sutherland stars as Tom Kirkman, a lower level cabinet member who suddenly has to become Commander-in-Chief after an attack at the State of Union kills the President and all those in the Presidential line of succession before him. He is faced with confusion and chaos in the country that he is now the leader of. This show is popular with viewers primarily because of Sutherland’s phenomenal acting and the series’ intriguing storyline. Designated Survivor comes on Wednesday nights on ABC.

Atlanta
This drama/comedy centers around Earn, who is played by Donald Glover, a broke Princeton dropout that learns of his cousin’s overnight fame as the rapper ‘Paper Boi’ Miles and becomes his manager in hopes of improving his unfulfilled life. The show explores the chronicles of Paper Boi, Earn, and Darius as they try to make it big in the music industry, while knowing the difference between real life and street life. This show explores the black experience of trying to become successful through music, and has become very popular with critics as well as regular viewers, receiving a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes just after a ten episode pilot. Because of this widespread popularity, the show is said to have a second season.

American Horror Story
This anthology series revolves around many characters and has many locations, including a haunted house, an asylum, a coven, a freak show, a hotel and a sinister farmhouse in North Carolina. This series explores themes of infidelity, sanity, oppression, discrimination, and addiction. The horror show started in 2011, and is still going strong in its sixth season. The show airs on FX, Wednesday nights.

Black-ish

An ABC show that started in 2014 has proven to be one of the funniest shows on the channel. The show is significant because it focuses on a modern African American family’s chronicles, something many popular shows don’t do. This show follows the story of a successful man who worries about his family losing touch with their black culture due to their lack of exposure to their roots from living in a white neighborhood. The show has earned a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes by critics and isn’t showing any signs of being over just yet.

The Flash
This show follows the DC story of Barry Allen (played by Grant Gustin), a young man who finds himself with the power of superhuman speed after being struck by lightning in his lab as a forensic scientist. After learning of his abilities, Allen decides to make a difference in the world by fighting evil under the alias The Flash. This show has been popular with superhero and DC comics fans alike, getting an 81% on audience approval (Rotten Tomatoes). The show started its third season on Oct. 4 and airs every Tuesday night on the CW.
