Are Metea students becoming more disrespectful?

Are+Metea+students+becoming+more+disrespectful%3F

Some students see school as a dreadful experience full of unfair grades given out by mean and unfair teachers, but unfortunately, as much as teens like to blame someone or something else for their troubles, realistically you can’t. School is a privilege that all students should not take for granted.

Although there are some unfair teachers here and there, they are the reason we have a better education, which leads to an improved and successful future. When a student disrespects a teacher or ignores them, it’s just bringing the student down educationally. There is an issue with disrespect towards teachers and administration at Metea Valley that needs to be fixed.

Personally, I think disrespecting adults is awful and unnecessary in any atmosphere, especially within school. When I see a student back-talking a teacher in class, it wastes the time of my classmates trying to learn.

Some students may become more accustomed to the more lenient teacher and may be more disrespectful in all classes. I believe teachers should stand their ground and not be as lenient when it comes to disrespect, if you want something to stop, start at the root and put an end to the issue right then and there.

I believe education is one of the biggest factors that impacts a child’s future. We are so fortunate to have schooling practically given to us, but many students don’t understand that well enough. There are many places in the world where people can’t even get an education, which leads to a not very promising future in most countries.

Kids at Metea wasting the time of teachers here is so bothersome because people like Malala Yousafzai are putting themselves in danger to get an education while some students here just slack off and disrespect administration here without thinking twice about it.

Although the students are mainly at fault, it could be some of the teachers’ faults as well. All teachers have a different approach to discipline when it comes to student’s disrespecting them. Some give a small verbal warning and brush it off, while others have a more instant and rash action and may yell and/or give out a referral.

Overall, the problem at hand is student disrespect. It’s a waste of class time and goes against one of our main focuses at Metea Valley, which is to live with integrity. Teachers need to be more strict when it comes to this issue. Ending the disrespect would make the teens at Metea better students and better people overall. Making students understand the importance can only improve them in the future. Respect is a skill needed anywhere, and especially in adulthood when it comes to careers, enforcing respect on us students will help prepare us for the future. Ultimately, it’s up to us students to change our actions, but with a little help from the teachers and administration, we can and will crack down on the pressing matter.

The title of this article is misrepresentative. There is nothing in the article that suggests that Metea students are any more disrespectful now than they’ve been in the past. Taking the idea that ‘students are growing more disrespectful’ out of the article leaves little of substance left. Is the article just in defense of common sense? I don’t think most people would disagree with the notion that respect is important, and that student disrespect is a problem. You also state in the article that you ‘think disrespecting adults is awful and unnecessary in any atmosphere.’ This statement is powered by the same false logic that other phrases like ‘You should never hit a woman’ run on. I believe the way a person behaves is what should entitle them to respect, rather than the year they were born or the genitals they were born with.

Also, there are two grammatical errors in your biography blurb.

‘Maddie was apart of . . .’ and ‘The sophomore is very excited . . .’

It’s not intended to be a personal attack. I’m simply trying to point them out as politely as I can manage; I’m sure she would prefer that her biography be grammatically correct, not to mention that having such errors in one’s biography detracts credibility from any articles this person might be writing.

To clarify the errors, since you evidently can’t see them:

        ‘Maddie was apart of . . .’

It should be ‘a part’, not ‘apart’.

‘The sophomore is very excited . . .’

It should be ‘This sophomore’, not ‘The sophomore’.

Though this is a problem, I definitely do think there are some worse things going on in other areas, and though there are some respect issues going on in Metea, I am saying we don’t need to prioritize on this one aspect. Like some other people said, Metea is not that bad in comparison to other schools, especially when it comes to disrespect. Also, nice job with the picture! That picture gives a great hint at what you are concerned about

You think Metea kids are disrespectful? Do you remember Hill Middle School? The disrespect was off the charts my friend.
In all seriousness, I think we should consider that these are young teens and their ideals and thought’s are very different from the ideas of the older generation. Therefore, something that is disrespectful in the eyes of an adult could be something that is tolerable to a teenager. There is a major gap between the older and newer generation in terms of their beliefs and if makes it hard for them to connect. Though one thing that has been common in history is the idea of new beliefs and the scoffing of it by an old generation. The young minds often are influenced by more open ideals and are willing to see new ideas of a system while the older mostly wants to stay the same, so when new ideas are brought up, it is initially rejected. But over time, those ideas will later be adopted and added upon. Maybe there will come a time where a kids disrespect is just the norm. You never know. Only time will tell.

Some times the teachers are doing the harassing, though, like when teachers get angry over dumb things, like one time in my class a kid was doing a problem on the board and drew a smiley face by it and the teacher was just like: “WHY ARE YOU DRAWING STUPID SMILEY FACES ON MY BOARD?! YOU NEED TO GROW UP!!!!” and we were all like woah, and the teacher turned to the rest of the class and yelled shut up to the class. I don’t think anyone can reasonably defend the teacher on that one (except for that teacher himself).

to everyone who says that respect is earned; Do your teachers have your respect? Not everything is about you. If you walk in loud and rowdy with a ‘I’m better than you attitude’, teachers will naturally be more cautious of you. Now, if you are quiet minding your own business but constantly talking to the person besides you even after the teacher tells you ‘stop’ then the teacher will have a bad opinion of you. Also it’s the YOUR job to gain the teacher’s respect not the other way around. Disrespecting adults has no excuse. They are older, and deserve more respect than what you would give your best friend, not in a bad sense though. it basically means instead of starting an email with “Hey,” start it with “Good evening/Afternoon/Morning Mr/Ms. Something”. When you text a friend you can say “Sup.” “Hey” “Helloooo!” or whatever, but you CANNOT do it with an adult. It is simply NOT ACCEPTABLE. ALSO remember, teachers could’ve chosen a different career. They chose to help students like everyone at Metea, and it’s our job to learn, NOT to judge the teacher, or try to ‘put them in their place’.

For those arguing that there are worse schools, that doesn’t justify disrespectful behavior. No need to compare or stoop to lower levels to make excuses for your behavior. There’s a reason that respect your elders is a common phrase, we as students don’t have the experience nor the justification to disrespect teachers

There is no point in trying to argue this, its like arguing that gorillas are better than humans, on one hand they are stronger but we are smarter, point is there will always be a division no matter if its 50% vs 50% or 25% vs 75%, no 2 people will share the exact same opinion about the same topic.
Some people will be disrespectful/ rebellious, while others will be goodie 2 shoes, this is just something we must accept.

A sophomore can’t make any claims about Metea students changing their behavior. The author has been in this school for little over a year so her opinion on any form of change in this school is invalid. She should have titled this “Metea has a problem with disrespect”, that was her main point anyway.

I agree with im just a guy who cares other schools are wayyy worse like West Chicago I would know I’ve gone there before. Here at metea its not that big of an issue as it is at other places but the thing is here at metea students take advantage of the kindness of a teacher and once the teacher gets tired of them being used obviously they are going to act rude because they were treated with disrespect and as soon as they do students who took advantage start calling them a**holes because they finally are taking charge of the situation in which in this case is there own fault but look to blame anyone else but themselves. This goes for anyone you meet and interact with you give them respect they will respect you even if you don’t like them have mutual respect and you’ll be just fine you don’t have to like them or them being your favorite person but as long as you get done with what you have to do there shouldn’t be a issue.Btw Maddie great job on this article really shines a light on a current issue we see all the time at school.

Students aren’t always the ones who are disrespectful at Metea Valley; while some students and some teachers may antagonize it, the other party shouldn’t carry on the argument. Even though people are different, you can’t teach them to tolerate the disrespect that they receive because it’s how they were raised. But it should be the duty of others post and before these arguments that have begun, to treat each other with at the least respect; respect for different ideals, respect for different friends, and respect for each other’s property. Overall this article is biased due to the writer’s little view of all events, even my response is biased due to my limited view on these events.

Students at Metea are disrespectful?Ha,you should’ve gone to school in West Chicago. We disrespected one of the Health teachers so much that the administration had to put one of the assistant principals in our class to establish order.Anyway, don’t forget the fact that their aren’t gangs at Metea either as members in them work together to deface school property, undermine the authority of school staff, and induce violence throughout the school(I’d know because I was sort of in one,but my Middle School shut us down early, rip.I never even participated in even ONE gang war 🙁 ),which is a lot worse than some kids not obeying what the faculty asks them to do.Just as you ask us to be appreciate the fact that we have access to learning, how about you appreciate the fact that the students at Metea aren’t as disrespectful as those in other schools?Just saying 😉

This is a good article, but while the students are at fault for many “situations” most of the time, I truly think that sometimes the teachers are at fault, like for instance, one time I got two and a half points marked off my algebra test because I wrote “the lines are parallel” instead of “they don’t intersect”. I think that was pretty dumb that I got that question marked wrong because of the way I answered it. However on the other hand, there was one time where somebody shouted f*** you to the teacher because the teacher was yelling at them for being on their phone and not getting off, and that kid should have been punished severely.

respect is a two way street and teachers cannot expect to be treated with respect when they don’t understand or attempt to empathize with the students they are teaching. Students aren’t getting more disrespectful, teachers are becoming less understanding of their students and make power moves to attempt to show the students they’re better.

Absolutely. Maddie, I know you, (I’m using my Internet name, so you don’t exactly know who I am) and when you make an argument, you’re usually right. As I said on the ‘Community honors military service with annual Veterans Day celebration’ article comments,

“I have to disagree with this. Many people were disrespectful during the assembly, such as rushing out as soon as it hit 2:25. There was also someone on the other set of bleachers, across the gym, who was pushing herself down the stairs while sitting down. She looked like a dog scooting across the carpet. I was disgusted, not only because I knew who she was (a bully bothering me for years), but also because of how crudely disrespectful she was acting. Talking was also a big issue. I remember it taking a while for people to be quiet.”

In my first period English class, my teachers have had to send out numerous students out to the hallway or even the class house for being disrespectful.

It could just be this generation, however. At Hill and at May Watts, the buildings were upgraded after we had left. May Watts now has air conditioning, Hill has benches outside and a new, better, electronic sign. Pretty much “This is why we can’t have nice things.” in a nutshell.
